• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

It's telling that Stupak received death threats. I mean, he was the most adamant anti-choicer in the whole debate but as soon as he compromises, on the hit list he goes. Also, condoms can stretch to nearly two metres in length. I know.

My favourite argument against the pro-life stance remains: If abortion is murder, how do you think we should fund the need for largely expanded prison capacities across the country? Because, seriously, ask any person who says abortion is murder, "so should these women be sentenced to long...

That is also a good measure! And, incidentally, coincides pretty precisely with my cut-off point (50% survival is at around 25 weeks). I wasn't saying there is only one place the line can be drawn; I was giving one option in reply to what was meant as an obnoxiously rhetorical question. You...

How is any other line ethically meaningful? You have to draw a line somewhere, and the point at which the foetus stops relying on the mother is a decent place. Up until that point, the mother should be able to choose what to do with the foetus, given that it is living off her body's resources.

How about at the point where the foetus can survive independently of the mother? That has always struck me as a good place!

No. No no no no no. It is way to easy to go from that to "eh, who cares about other contraceptives, I can just get an abortion if I conceive".

See, I think what a lot of people are trying to say, is that in a healthy relationship the parents would want to DISCUSS it and decide together. Why the hell would it not affect anything?

Holy christ Furret no one is saying that it should be legally required for the father to have any say whatsoever. What they're trying to say is that it's best for each couple to decide together, since if the mother decides to keep the baby it would be up to both of them to raise it - so, if the...

Actually, no. Let's look at the quotes in question: The first quote is straightforward. The next two are important. In the second, VPLJ "that" refers to your first point, ie. Quote #1. In Quote #3, you're using this structure: Some people think x shouldn't be allowed, so arguments against...

oy, off my analogies in the same vein, though: re: abortion is murder What do you think the penalty for having an unlawful abortion should be? I'm sure you'll agree that with this most heinous crime, the only correct solution is a very heavy prison sentence - perhaps even life imprisonment! -...

if people listened to me more often the world would be a better place RIGHT Valor, Altmer, don't call em a pompous ass any more. Drifloon Rocks, stop being condescending because you are only proving that you have no way to counter the arguments being thrown against you. Debate properly or...

Well, if you commit manslaughter it isn't your fault either. Also, you haven't answered my question: would you charge these women with murder?

    Abortion

Don't condescend. It makes you look far less mature than you think. Anyway, answer me this. If abortion is killing a human being, and it is unlawful, it would be classified as murder, yes? Would you charge women who had abortions done illegally with murder? For that matter, would you call a...

Why is it justifiable? Because without food we'd die? Well, okay, but I thought all life was equally important, so why is it okay for us to kill things for food? @@ no, you didn't, you clearly said the foetus reproduced through cell duplication. sorry. the first thing you see in the forum...

wow how did I miss that reproduction requires that a new individual organism is created. obviously this is not the case with cell duplication. edit: but yes of course a foetus is alive.
